“In order to achieve great outcomes for your clients, you first need to learn how you can best serve them.”
Who is Matt Harbert?
After spending 24 years growing up in Kenya and returning to the U.S. for college, Matt Harbert entered the commercial real estate industry along an unusual path. Starting out with an internship in CBRE’s Chicago office, Matt embraced what he calls a relationship-driven, client service industry where he could apply the community development tenets he learned during his involvement with Hope for Life in East Africa. He then moved to Colorado in January of 2015 to work in the Denver CBRE office where he gravitated towards the technology industry.
When asked about one of the greatest challenges he has had to overcome so far in his commercial real estate career, Matt comments, “Moving to Denver not knowing anyone, I had to build my own book of contacts and learn how the city works.” He acknowledges that this experience made him a student to the marketplace and allowed him to operate from a blank canvas with a fresh perspective.
Matt and his team have secured leases for some of Colorado’s top technology companies. Matt focused his time and efforts on learning how business growth cycles can help build real estate strategies for his technology clients. “Technology is growing much more quickly than most markets, forcing real estate to be more flexible, especially in office spaces.” He also notes the importance of office culture to his technology clients and goes out of his way to learn as much as he can about that culture before advising them. “In order to achieve great outcomes for your clients, you first need to learn how you can best serve them,” Matt comments.
Outside the office, Matt volunteers for Denver Active 20-30 Children’s Foundation, which has raised $1.5 million in the past year for disadvantaged children in Denver and over $10 million since its inception in 1987. He is also passionate about venture capitalism and is a member of the Association for Corporate Growth. Matt is grateful to be in Denver with tons of young people moving to the city, which he enjoys exploring with his fiancé.
