Cheri Gerou, Manager State Buildings Program

Cheri was born into a ranching family in Wyoming, but has spent most of her life in Colorado.  She attended the University of Colorado at Denver, earning a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts. She has worked with numerous firms in the Denver area including, Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz and SOM. In 1986, Gerou and her husband Phil (also an architect), founded their own firm – Gerou & Associates, Ltd.  Their firm specializes in residential, hospitality, small commercial and historic preservation. Gerou has served as president of both AIA Denver and AIA Colorado.  She has presented at AIA Grassroots and AIA National Conventions in both breakout and main convention presentations.  She has served on the State Licensing Board of Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.  Gerou served as an item writer for NCARB and served on the Professional Development Committee for NCARB.  Additionally, she has served as a national vice president of health care issues for the National Council of State Legislators. In 2009, Cheri was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives, serving House District 25 for six years.  During her tenure in the state legislature, Gerou served as chair of the Appropriations Committee and chair of the Joint Budget Committee.  Cheri was the first woman in state history to chair the Joint Budget Committee as a member of the Colorado House of Representatives. In the fall of 2015, Gerou accepted a position with the Office of State Architect as Manager of the State Buildings Program. Cheri and Phil have two adult children, a daughter-in-law and a new granddaughter.  She and her husband live in Evergreen.

David Turnquist, Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Management

Dave Turnquist came to the university in 1998 as the assistant vice chancellor for facilities operations to begin work on the new Anschutz Medical Campus, in conjunction with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Facilities Projects.  Turnquist oversaw the development of more than 3 million square feet of state-of-the-art research, education and patient care space, along with the supporting infrastructure from a central utility plant.  With the completion of the majority of the buildings on campus, Facilities Operations was merged with Facilities Projects and Turnquist was selected as associate vice chancellor for the newly created Facilities Management Department.  Today, Turnquist manages four directors spanning many different disciplines including, building maintenance and operations, facilities projects, parking and transportation, grounds, fire and life safety, engineering, construction services, printing services, food services, mail services, sustainability, and housekeeping.  These disciplines represent more than 230 staff and an annual budget of more than $55 million, including more than $1billion in capital construction during his tenure at the university. Turnquist obtained his Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Rhode Island and his Masters of Business Administration at the University of Colorado.  He has active professional engineering licenses in various states since 1979, and obtained his Certified Facilities Management (IFMA) designation in 1993 and Certified Educational Facilities Professional (APPA) designation in 2013.  He is a member of the Association of Physical Plant Administrators, the Rocky Mountain APPA (RMA), and the International Facilities Management Association professional organizations.  As a member of RMA, he has served as the professional development chair, president-elect, and currently the president. Turnquist started his career designing support structures in nuclear power plants and changed his path to engineering and facilities management at the University of Connecticut.  From there he moved to Texas and became the director of facilities management at Baylor College of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center in Houston before coming to Colorado as the assistant vice chancellor for facilities operations.
