Thornton Recreation Center to Undergo $13M Renovation

Pinkard Construction has been awarded the $13 million dollar renovation of the Margaret W. Carpenter Recreation Center in Thornton. The project will be an occupied renovation and is expected to begin construction in early spring of this year.

Architectural design services will be provided by long-time Pinkard collaborator Ohlson Lavoie Collaborative (OLC), a firm with over 59 years experience designing aquatic and recreation facilities.

“We are thrilled to be remodeling an exciting aquatic environment for the people of Thornton,” said Robert (Bob) McDonald, senior principal at OLC. “Not only will they experience the latest in aquatic play, instruction and exercise but we will also be providing a much-needed Universal Locker Room expansion to better serve the needs of families and those with special needs. There will be something for everyone at the newly renovated Carpenter Recreation Center!”

The two firms will work together, using industry-leading technology, to create an accessible pipe galley for maintenance and repairs while allowing the city to keep the facility open during normal business hours.

“We are very excited to be working with the City of Thornton and OLC,” said Rick Converse, preconstruction manager for the project. “It is a very complicated renovation, but our virtual design technology has given absolute clarity on how to proceed.”

The remodeled facility will include a new 6-lane lap pool with adjacent aqua-exercise pool, wave pool with lazy river and bubble pit, activity pool with zero-depth entry, play structure, geysers and sprays, two water slides and 20-person therapeutic hydro-jet spa.
