On October 16, Tribe Development Company, a comprehensive real estate development and advisory firm born out of the desire to develop better spaces and experiences for everyone, officially broke ground on The Buxton Hotel, marking the start of a full renovation and reimagining of the former Best Western University Inn into a vibrant, design-forward boutique hotel that celebrates the creative spirit and culture of Fort Collins.
The revitalized property will join the BW Signature Collection®, a portfolio of hotels recognized for their originality and unique personalities.
The groundbreaking event brought together community leaders, project partners, and guests to commemorate the start of construction on the 69-room hotel, which will remain open throughout the phased redevelopment.
The architect for the project is RVi, and the interior designer is VFLA.
Vision and Legacy
Ashley Stiles, founder and CEO of Tribe Development Company, shared her personal vision for the project:
“The Buxton isn’t just a hotel—it’s a place designed to bring people together, celebrate Fort Collins, and create memories,” said Stiles. “My grandmother, Nina Belle Buxton, embodied the warmth, strength, and hospitality we hope every guest will feel when they walk through our doors. This project is about honoring the past while boldly building the future.”
Community Impact
Fort Collins Mayor Jeni Arndt emphasized the project’s broader significance to the local economy and culture:
“The Buxton reflects the spirit of Fort Collins—creative, welcoming, and community-minded,” said Arndt. “This investment strengthens our city by creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and drawing visitors to experience all that Fort Collins has to offer.”
Local Partnerships
Ben Van Hoose, regional president of Alpine Bank Fort Collins, highlighted the importance of community-focused development:
“At Alpine Bank, we believe in investing in projects that strengthen the fabric of our community—and The Buxton is exactly that,” said Van Hoose.
“Just down the street from our own offices, this project represents a new chapter of vitality for College Avenue and for Fort Collins as a whole.”
A Brand’s Vision for the Future
Jake Moretti, regional director of North American Development for Best Western® Hotels & Resorts, spoke to the alignment between The Buxton and the brand’s evolving vision:
“The Buxton is exactly the kind of project we want to see more of at Best Western—hotels that are authentic to their communities and offer a unique sense of place,” said Moretti. “We are honored to support a project that blends history, innovation, and community—the very values we believe define the future of hospitality.”
Looking Ahead
When complete, The Buxton will feature:
- Fully reimagined guest rooms and bathrooms
