On May 20, Neenan Archistruction and Respite Care, Inc. celebrated the grand opening and ribbon cutting of Respite Care’s new purpose-built facility in Timnath, Colorado, marking a major milestone in expanding access to specialized care and support for children with developmental disabilities and their families across Northern Colorado.
The new 20,000-square-foot facility more than doubles the organization’s previous space, allowing Respite Care to expand capacity to serve more than 150 children and families across Larimer and Weld counties. Designed specifically around the unique physical, emotional and sensory needs of the children served, the building reflects a deeply collaborative partnership between Respite Care staff and Neenan’s integrated design-build team.
“This ribbon cutting marks a new chapter for Respite Care and the families we serve,” said Kristi Biles, executive director of Respite Care, Inc. “This building represents our community’s belief that children with developmental disabilities and their families deserve support, connection and a place where they belong.”
Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Respite Care provides short-term and extended care services for children with developmental disabilities, including overnight and weekend programs that allow families time to attend medical appointments, manage daily responsibilities or simply rest. The new facility creates space for the organization to expand those services while improving the overall experience for children, families and staff.
The facility was designed to foster accessibility, safety and comfort while creating a welcoming, homelike environment. Key features include dedicated sensory rooms with programmable lighting and calming spaces, indoor play and movement areas that support recreation and therapy, secure access systems that enhance supervision and family gathering spaces designed to support connection. The single-story layout and seamless indoor and outdoor transitions further improve accessibility for children using wheelchairs, walkers and assisted mobility devices.
Beyond expanding capacity, the new facility strengthens Respite Care’s ability to serve as a critical regional resource for families across Northern Colorado by increasing access to overnight care, extended respite services and specialized support programs that allow caregivers time to rest, work, attend appointments and manage daily life.
“Respite Care has done so much to support children and families in our community, and it is an honor to help create a space that reflects that mission in every detail,” said Bill Pigg, president of Neenan Archistruction. “This facility is the result of thoughtful design and collaboration focused on creating an environment where every child can feel safe, supported and included.”
This project represents the continued evolution of a more than 20-year partnership between Respite Care and Neenan Archistruction. The organizations first partnered in 2003 on Respite Care’s Fort Collins facility, with Neenan continuing to support improvements as the organization’s needs have grown.
