UCHealth Starts Major Hospital Expansion in Colorado Springs

UCHealth is partnering with JE Dunn Construction on a significant expansion at its Memorial Hospital North campus, advancing a long-term master facility plan designed to meet the growing healthcare needs of Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas. The multi-year effort includes a new patient tower, expanded clinical and diagnostic services, and a new four-story, 302,000-square-foot parking structure to support increased campus activity.

The expansion builds upon more than a decade of growth at Memorial Hospital North, which has become a healthcare hub for the region. The master plan prioritizes flexibility, operational efficiency, and future growth while maintaining uninterrupted care in an active hospital environment.

“This groundbreaking represents more than the beginning of a new building,” said UCHealth President and CEO Liz Concordia. “The Memorial Hospital North expansion is a major investment in our community and our mission, strengthening access to high-quality care and ensuring patients throughout southern Colorado can benefit from the nationally recognized specialists and services offered across UCHealth.”

Once completed, the total expansion and renovation will encompass 365,411 square feet, including 308,265 square feet of new construction and 57,146 square feet of renovation. Key elements to the new tower feature an initial build-out of 50 inpatient beds, with future capacity for up to 190 beds, 14 ICU rooms with shell space for 22 additional ICU rooms, and 36 medical-surgical inpatient rooms.

Delivering with care while building for the future

Construction is taking place within the actively operating hospital, requiring extensive phasing, coordination, and safety planning to minimize disruption to patients, staff, and visitors.

“This is a complex project that touches nearly every side of the hospital,” said JE Dunn Senior Project Manager Brad Clatterbuck. “It requires careful planning, shared decision-making, and constant coordination to safely deliver each phase while the campus remains fully operational.”

JE Dunn Construction previously completed the original 208,877-square-foot Memorial Hospital North campus in 2007 and has partnered with UCHealth on healthcare projects dating back more than two decades. The team is working alongside Perkins&Will as architect of record, with Hammes serving as owner’s representative, and support from key trade partners, Specialized Engineering Solutions, Martin/Martin, and Kimley-Horn.

“Being back on the Memorial Hospital North campus is especially meaningful,” said JE Dunn Project Director Matt Bilstein. “Our General Superintendent, Tony Scovel and I were part of the original build nearly two decades ago, and that was a challenging but very rewarding project. We’re excited to work with UCHealth to build on that foundation to enhance healthcare delivery for years to come.”

As Memorial Hospital North continues to increase the acuity and complexity of care delivered on campus, this expansion ensures infrastructure, capacity, and flexibility needed to support future growth.
