Denver International Airport (DEN) today announced that Chief Executive Officer Phil Washington will retire effective August 1, 2026, concluding a distinguished career spanning more than five decades of military and public service.
“I am honored to have served the public for so many years,” said Washington. “But this was a long-planned decision. I’ve worked in transportation and infrastructure and we have accomplished so much but my greatest accomplishments have been about building world-class organizations driven by vision, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to people. I am deeply proud of the work we have done and know that DEN remains in good hands with a talented team of dedicated professionals.”
During his tenure, Washington established a bold strategic direction for the airport through Vision 100 (V100) and Operation 2045 (OP45)—comprehensive plans designed to guide DEN toward serving 100 million annual passengers and beyond. These frameworks have become models for airports across North America and internationally.
“Phil Washington has helped guide DEN through an extraordinary period of growth and opportunity,” said Denver Mayor Mike Johnston. “His leadership has had a transformational impact on DEN and the aviation industry, helping position our airport as a global leader in innovation, connectivity and customer experience. Phil’s legacy will be felt for generations, particularly the many lives that have been and will be impacted through the Center of Equity and Excellence in Aviation.”
Washington championed investments in people and workforce development, advanced career pathways, leadership development, small business growth, and inclusive workforce initiatives, strengthening DEN’s organizational culture and national reputation.
Under his leadership, DEN executed one of the most ambitious capital improvement programs in its history, including:
- Major progress on the Great Hall Program, currently ahead of schedule and under budget
- Expansion and modernization of concourses and passenger facilities including the addition of more than 30 new gates and a new ground load facility for Frontier Airlines
- A $500 million baggage system modernization project
- Development of the Consolidated Rental Car Facility, terminal expansions, and Peña Boulevard improvements
- Introduction of new train cars and planned pedestrian tunnels connecting concourses
- Expansion of concessions offerings, with 2025 marking a record year
Washington also advanced sustainability initiatives, including efforts to position DEN as the world’s first carbon-free airport, and strengthened operational performance. DEN earned zero-discrepancy FAA Part 139 safety certifications in four of the past five years and was recognized as the nation’s top green fleet.
Under his leadership, DEN also expanded its global connectivity and achieved historic milestones, including:
- Ranking among the top domestic airport networks in the United States
- Launch of Lufthansa’s A380 service between Denver and Munich
- Record-setting domestic and international passenger traffic
“I want to thank Mayor Mike Johnston and former Mayor Michael Hancock for allowing me to lead DEN these past five years. As I step away, I do so knowing that DEN is stronger than ever and I am leaving the airport better than I found it,” Washington added. “We dreamed big, acted boldly, and delivered meaningful results for our community.”
