Initial design plans for Civic Center Next 100 were approved by the Landmark Preservation Committee on January 21, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing revitalization of Civic Center Park, one of Denver’s most iconic and historically significant spaces.

The Civic Center Next 100 project, which celebrates the park’s centennial, aims to enhance and preserve the historic features of Civic Center Park while introducing thoughtful, modern updates that will create a premier destination for civic gatherings, community events, and cultural celebrations.

“By revitalizing our iconic Civic Center Park, we are investing in a more vibrant, connected downtown that honors our past while embracing the future,” said Denver Mayor Mike Johnston. “The Civic Center Next 100 design plans will enhance accessibility, functionality, and strengthen the bond between neighborhoods, ensuring that our civic spaces continue to reflect the dynamic spirit of our growing city.”

Civic Center Park serves as Denver’s front door and connects the Golden Triangle, Cultural Complex, and Capitol Hill to the bustling downtown. The upcoming transformation will honor the park’s history while preserving the heart of this important downtown network. This revitalization effort honors Civic Center Park as Denver’s first National Historic Landmark while ensuring that it remains a dynamic and engaging space for future generations. With improved infrastructure and enhanced programming capabilities, the park will retain its historic character while integrating contemporary elements for both everyday use and special occasions.

“We are excited to continue moving forward with the Civic Center Next 100 project,” said Jolon Clark, DPR executive director. “This space is the cultural heart of Denver, and our goal is to honor its rich history while also creating a welcoming environment for future community gatherings. With the Landmark Preservation Committee’s approval, we are one step closer to transforming Civic Center Park into a premier civic destination for the entire city.”

The new designs for Civic Center Park will include enhanced accessibility, updated circulation, new plantings, and improvements to key amenities, ensuring the park remains a welcoming and functional space for all.

“The energy and enthusiasm demonstrated by such strong community support in this process was truly remarkable,” said Eric Lazzari, executive director of the Civic Center Conservancy. Having so many voices unite behind this vision, all sharing a deep love for Civic Center Park, created a powerful momentum that resonated throughout the proceedings and, as several commissioners noted, were impactful their deliberations. We look forward to continuing to partner with DPR to realize the community’s desires for a Civic Center that is inviting, accessible, active, and thriving”.

Civic Center Park has long been a place for civic engagement, cultural events, and community celebrations. This project is intended to elevate its role as a key gathering space in the heart of Denver, making it an even more vibrant location for the diverse events that define the city.

In October 2023, the City and County of Denver and Civic Center Conservancy announced the selection of Studio Gang, a world-renowned architecture and urban design firm, led by Jeanne Gang, to lead the Phase 1 Implementation of Civic Center Next 100.

Additional details will be presented for phase two of the project and the design progresses.
