Market Perspective: Opposition to Affordable Housing Development Fees

After only a week of the release of Mayor Hancock’s plan for affordable housing, opposition is already mounting on the affordable housing development fee on new construction projects in order to pay for the 6,000-unit, $150 million affordable housing plan. Naysayers conclude that the fee will result in higher costs and rents, therefore producing the opposite effect of what affordable housing is intended to provide.
