Voice Media Group and its flagship publication, Westword, have officially unveiled their vibrant new headquarters in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Set within the historic Dodge Building, the space reaffirms Westword’s role as an enduring cultural voice in Denver while offering a striking example of adaptive reuse and editorial workspace design.
To bring this vision to life, Voice Media Group (VMG) partnered with Denver-based, women-owned architecture firm Neoera, which transformed the landmark building into a flexible and expressive space that speaks to both the creative energy of the enterprise’s staff and the architectural character of its surroundings. The resulting design blends history, functionality, and visual impact, perfectly suited to the dual nature of Westword itself: independent, irreverent, and deeply rooted in the city it covers.
Key Features of the New Headquarters Include:
- Preserved Historic Architecture: Neoera retained and celebrated the building’s original barrel-vaulted ceiling, concrete structure, and historical detailing. These heritage features ground the space in authenticity and provide a rich architectural canvas.
- Free-Flowing, Zoned Workspace Design: The office strikes a balance between public-facing energy and private focus. Neoera designed a palette of spatial zones, ranging from private offices and acoustically sensitive deep-work rooms, to open sit-stand desks, a central bullpen for sales and marketing, “stand-up” all-staff meeting zones, and a dedicated Board Room for external clients. This zoning reflects the real-time needs of journalists and media creators to collaborate intensely and focus in isolation.
- Murals: Westword’s long-standing ties to Denver’s art and graffiti scene are reflected in seven distinct mural moments throughout the office. These works introduce vibrant color and optical depth to the space, “punching” the interior with dimension and personality while reinforcing the publication’s voice and local relevance.
- Editorial Identity Made Spatial: Just as Westword curates what’s new, urgent, and culturally resonant, Neoera’s design weaves that ethos into the space through super graphics, bold color palettes, and carefully placed visual storytelling elements that energize the work environment and subtly guide circulation.
The Westword & Voice Media Group headquarters is a celebration of local journalism, adaptive reuse, and Denver’s creative soul. Designed with intention and edge, the project reflects Neoera’s deep understanding of how space influences culture, collaboration, and storytelling.
