Tom Oertel

Suntec Concrete, the largest concrete subcontractor in the Southwestern United States, bolstered its business development team with the naming of industry veteran Tom Oertel as director of business development. Based in Denver, Oertel will be an integral part of Suntec’s growing presence in the Denver market. In this role, Oertel will lead the business development efforts for Suntec in Colorado.

“This was a great opportunity for me to join a company like Suntec that is one of the best in the country at what they do,” Oertel said. “Suntec has a great reputation in the industry and it’s exciting to be a part of the team. I hope to build on the relationships I have established during my career in Colorado and help Suntec continue to grow.”

Oertel has more than 30 years of experience in the construction industry, most of that time in the western U.S. He worked in a variety of roles in his career, including superintendent and project manager, before transitioning into business development. Oertel earned his degree in construction management from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He enjoys the Colorado outdoors with his wife spending time camping, fishing, and skiing.

“Tom is a great addition to our team in Denver, he brings both the ability to connect with people and a great deal of technical construction knowledge that is valuable to our clients,” said Suntec President and CEO Derek Wright. “We’re looking forward to having Tom part of the Suntec team and the impact that he can have in Denver.”

Emily E. Cox Recognized as the 2023 Recipient of the John Parr Leadership Award

Norris Design Senior Associate Emily E. Cox has been recognized as a 2023 recipient of the John Parr Leadership Award.

Emily E. Cox

The award, named in honor of the late John Parr, is bestowed upon a standout leader from the Downtown Denver Leadership Program who demonstrated growth and excellence throughout the year. This year’s award was presented at the 2023 cohort’s presentation, “Exploring Open Streets Culture in Denver: Activating and Placemaking” in early November. In her role, Emily helped facilitate the class’s involvement in ¡Viva! Streets, an effort celebrating Denver’s neighborhoods and supporting local businesses with temporary car-free streets. Over four Sundays from May through August, 3.5 miles of downtown streets were closed to cars and opened to people, encouraging visitors to walk, bike, dance or scoot across the heart of Denver and connect with the community through exercise, entertainment and food.

Emily was instrumental in leading the class presentation group, going above and beyond to recreate the ¡Viva! Streets event for the cohort’s presentation. Throughout the program, she developed her leadership skills and expertly navigated the complexities of working in group settings, building consensus along the way. Emily was recognized for knowing when to listen and when to step in to provide decisive leadership at critical moments, producing results and moving projects forward. She was widely admired by her peers for her collaborative and steady guidance and for her commitment to activating Denver’s urban core in an exciting new way.

“We are incredibly proud of Emily and her achievement of this award. Those who work within the walls of Norris Design have long been inspired by her ability to lead by example and to inspire her peers. It’s wonderful to see her talent recognized by other industry leaders,” said Jared Carlon, principal at Norris Design.
