Continuing his 40+ years of practicing architecture, Dennis Humphries, AIA, architect and co-founding partner of RATIO Design (RATIO) Denver Studio, will be moving into a consulting principal role on September 1.
Humphries is recognized for his preservation, civic, and public library work. He has built a reputation as a community leader and advocate for design, particularly in libraries. Humphries has completed more public library commissions than any other architect in Colorado, having been principal author for over 125.
He will remain engaged in several ongoing RATIO library projects in a consultant role where he will be part of realizing the design and supporting client needs.
This move will create a platform for talented local designers to build upon his work. Principal and Managing Denver Studio Leader Kitty Yuen, AIA, will help carry on his legacy to preserve and enhance the rich architectural history of Colorado, spanning three centuries.
“It has been a great honor to work beside Dennis, and I admire his fortitude and commitment to building a greater sense of place through more sustainable and livable neighborhoods. His impact can be seen throughout Denver and the Western Mountain Region, serving a vast number of communities for years to come. We are elated to build upon this foundation and carry out the firm’s commitment to designing for impact,” says Kitty Yuen, AIA, principal and managing Denver studio leader.
This announcement follows the 2019 merger when Humphries Poli Architects (HPA) merged with RATIO to bring enhanced services, resources, and design expertise to the region.
Humphries co-founded HPA in Denver 28 years ago with a mission to serve the community through meaningful design – achieving recognition as Firm of the Year in Denver, Colorado, and the Mountain Region. Notable projects include Anythink Libraries, Colorado State Capitol Dome, McNichols Civic Center, and The Community Library.
Humphries served as the chair of the Denver Landmark Preservation Commission; chair of the Design Review Committee for historic downtown Grand Lake; member of the Board of Directors of Historic Denver; vice president of Denver’s Civic Center Conservancy; and currently serves on the State Historical and Fund Advisory Board.
Additionally, he served as president and board member of AIA Colorado as well as president and board member of AIA Denver. He was a recipient of the James S. Sudler Award for Contributions to AIA Denver and Denver architecture. And most recently, the recipient of the Civic Center Conservancy’s Elaine Asarch Award for the design of Civic Center Park, Denver’s only National Historic Landmark.
