Students and staff of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College joined GH Phipps and Eidos Architects to sign the final beam before it was put into place for the expansion of the school’s athletic facility. The beam signing, a construction industry tradition, took place on Friday, November 18 for the Denver Public School, located at 19535 East 46th Avenue.
The $15,760,000, 16,000-square-foot expansion project includes a Colorado High School Activities Association-compliant gym for high school basketball and volleyball and a CHSAA-compliant turf field for high school soccer with bleachers. The project is scheduled for completion in August 2023.
“We’re very proud of our tremendous relationship with the Denver Public Schools and having the students and staff take part in the beam signing event made this milestone for the project all the more satisfying,” said Rich Mendez, superintendent, GH Phipps. “It gave the students a chance to become a part of the project and maybe learn a little about the construction industry they may not have known about before. We especially enjoyed the awesome drum line and seeing the students’ faces as they were signing the beam.”
