Boulder, CO – Innovative affordable housing designed by Pyatt Studio as part of the Thunder Valley Regenerative Plan will be featured in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s exhibition series “By the People: Designing a Better America,” which highlights socially responsible design and explores the challenges faced by urban, suburban and rural communities across the country.
“We’re honored and excited to participate in this exhibition alongside the Pine Ridge Community, Thunder Valley CDC, BNIM, KLJ and Studio NYL Structural Engineers,” said Pyatt Studio’s Design Director Rob Pyatt.
Pyatt Studio focuses on community driven sustainable development in rural, native american and indigenous communities worldwide. Their mission driven team of architects, planners, and research staff are dedicated to creating buildings, places, and communities that provide a better quality of life for all people.
Years in the making, the Thunder Valley Regenerative Plan is a visionary community design collaboration between local Pine Ridge Indian Reservation community members, Oglala Lakota 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Thunder Valley CDC, and architecture firms BNIM and Pyatt Studio, with essential support from KLJ Engineering and Studio NYL Structural Engineers. Informed by innovative, community driven architectural design and rooted in the voices and values of Lakota people, the project takes a comprehensive approach to creating systemic change on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
“By the People: Designing a Better America,” features design solutions that expand access to education, food, health care and affordable housing; increase social and economic inclusion; offer improved alternative transportation options; and provide a balanced approach to land use between the built and natural environment. It will be exhibited from Sept. 30 2016 to Feb. 26, 2017 at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.
