The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Colorado recognized local architecture firms for outstanding design at the AIA Colorado Design & Honor Awards Celebration on Friday, September 13 at The Cable Center. AIA Colorado additionally awarded local architects for their leadership in the profession.
Peer-reviewed by a panel of architects in Minneapolis, Minn., the design awards were given to a selection of Colorado-designed projects which exemplified innovative use of materials, space and design, as well as creatively addressed the design challenge.
“Particularly in times of rapid growth like Colorado has been experiencing, it’s critical to pause and celebrate the excellent architecture that is propelling us into the future,” said 2019 AIA Colorado President Zachary Taylor, AIA. “This year’s award recipients are leading the charge in creating innovative and inviting buildings that positively impact the communities they serve.”
Awards of Distinction were given to exemplary projects based on the location of the architecture firm to highlight the diversity and talent of AIA members across Colorado. Projects which received an Award of Distinction then automatically advanced for statewide award consideration in the following levels: Honorable Mention, Award of Merit, or the top award: Award of Excellence. See below for award winners.
In addition to the design awards, local architects were recognized with Honor Awards for their breadth of work, leadership in the profession, and contributions to their communities and to the state of Colorado.
• Young Architect of the Year: Kevin Nguyen, AIA, Regular Architecture, LLC
• Young Firm of the Year: open studio | architecture
• Architect of the Year: William Moon, AIA, Tryba Architects
“The 2019 AIA Colorado Honor Award recipients are talented architects who care about their colleagues, their clients and the community around them. They are leaders who are committed to giving back to the profession and Colorado at-large,” said Taylor.
