Denver Federal Center Slated to Receive $33M in Low Carbon Materials Through the Inflation Reduction Act

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) plans to invest approximately $33 million in parking lots, sidewalks, roadways, bridge replacement and new fencing throughout the Denver Federal Center campus.

This project’s scope will focus on improving safety, drainage and accessibility while utilizing low-embodied carbon materials such as asphalt, concrete and steel to meet the carbon reduction goals set forth by the Biden-Harris Administration. This project will be funded through the Inflation Reduction Act and is one of more than 150 low-embodied carbon projects that GSA announced on November 6, 2023.

“This investment will not only improve the Denver Federal Center’s infrastructure but also provide a solution that helps reduce the effects of climate change with products made right here in America,” said Regional Administrator Denise Maes.

The project marks another step toward achieving President Biden’s federal sustainability goals, including net zero emissions procurement by 2050, while supporting good American manufacturing jobs.

The Inflation Reduction Act includes $3.4 billion for GSA to further market research and development of low-embodied carbon materials, and to build more sustainable and cost-efficient high-performance facilities. GSA’s Inflation Reduction Act projects will implement new technologies and accelerate GSA’s efforts in achieving a net-zero emissions federal building portfolio by 2045. Through these investments, GSA estimates that it could reduce carbon emissions by 2.3 million metric tons in greenhouse gas emissions. That is the equivalent of taking about 500,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles off the road for one year.

GSA provides centralized procurement and shared services for the federal government, managing a nationwide real estate portfolio of nearly 370 million rentable square feet, overseeing about $87 billion in products and services via federal contracts, and delivering technology services that serve millions of people across dozens of federal agencies. GSA’s mission is to deliver the best customer experience and value in real estate, acquisition, and technology services to the government and the American people. The GSA’s Rocky Mountain Region provides products and services throughout Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
