Denver Mayor Mike Johnston will serve as the keynote speaker at Denver-based affordable housing nonprofit, Rocky Mountain Communities’ (RMC), Annual Celebration Dinner on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.
Before speaking, the mayor will receive RMC’s “Affordable Housing Innovator for Individual” award which recognizes an individual whose efforts have advanced important opportunities or removed major obstacles for the affordable housing industry in Colorado that will have a measurable impact now, and in the future on the lives of low-income residents in our communities. The mayor will speak about several affordable housing topics relevant to the metro Denver area including addressing the critical topic of expanding affordable housing to strengthen our communities and create opportunity for families.
“As a key player in the affordable housing industry in Colorado, we are committed to developing more affordable housing that creates opportunities for families and strengthens our communities,” said Mark Marshall, chief executive officer at Rocky Mountain Communities. “We look forward to hearing the mayor address our attendees with his vision for expanding affordable housing, and we are honored to recognize the mayor with the Affordable Housing Innovator for Individual award at the event.”
Since taking office in July 2023, Mayor Johnston has made affordable housing a top priority and developed a plan to create 44,000 units of affordable housing for Denver over the next ten years in collaboration with nonprofit and for-profit developers by using municipal, state and federal funds. In the mayor’s first six months of office, his administration met the goal of moving indoors over 1,000 people experiencing homelessness. Through Mayor Johnston’s initiatives and leadership, Denver has improved outcomes across the board, from encampment closures and housing outcomes to public health and safety, while bringing significant impact on every corner of the city.
Proceeds from the evening will support RMC residents and Resident Services programs that engage residents, staff, and members of the community to build Safe, Equitable, Resilient and Vibrant (SERV) communities where people are empowered and thrive. RMC focuses on holistic care – engaging the whole person – to help residents with upward mobility. Specifically, proceeds from the night will support housing stability, financial stability, health and wellness services, youth and adult education, digital resilience and community engagement and safety.
