After 20 years, ex-Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway and partner Tim Schmidt are closing the doors to their renowned Cherry Creek Steakhouse (2500. E. 1st Ave.) on August 31, 2024.
The reason for the restaurant’s closure is due to the redevelopment of Cherry Creek West, which will span from University Blvd. to Clayton Lane and from 1st Ave. to the Cherry Creek waterway.
“The ongoing Cherry Creek Mall construction project requires our closure. Our plan is to continue to work with our development partners to determine a post-construction location,” a statement said on the restaurant’s website. “We have been honored to have been your dining choice throughout the years for special events and family celebrations and we hope to see you this month to thank you personally.”
When longtime friends Elway and Schmidt created Elways, they envisioned a place where friends, families, and business professionals could celebrate life’s victories, or just unwind at the end of a busy day. Where an ever-changing menu offered the best of the best, accompanied by fine wines at fair prices, all delivered in a contemporary atmosphere much like Colorado itself – adventurous, fun, and always alive.
The fine-dining restaurant also has locations in downtown Denver, two on concourses at Denver International Airport and another in Vail.
The rezoning of Cherry Creek West was unanimously approved by the Denver Planning Board this week which will allow building heights up to 13 stories. This application is due to be presented to the council’s Land Use, Transportation, and Infrastructure Committee next week on August 13.
