Exciting Progress Continues Along 16th Street!

In 2024, downtown Denver’s 16th Street Mall project reached many key milestones in transforming this iconic corridor, bringing vibrant new features, sustainable improvements, and enhanced accessibility. With renovations advancing steadily, the city is on track for the majority of blocks to be ready for activation by late May. Denver is poised to unveil a reimagined 16th Street that will be a hub of activity and connection for generations to come. Check out the graphic above or read below for more information on these impressive milestones.

2024 Year in Review

Construction

  • Trees planted: 133
  • Hours worked (PCL and subcontractors): 651,000
  • Utility conflicts resolved: 26
  • Cubic yards of dirt excavated: 30,000 (this is equivalent to 9 Olympic swimming pools) 
  • Cubic yards of concrete placed: 7,306 (this is equivalent to 34,791 bathtubs)
  • Number of pavers installed: 427,244
  • Number of intersections completed: 2
  • Number of blocks completed: 4
  • Number of blocks that started Phase 1 of construction: 2
  • Number of blocks that started Phase 2 of construction: 7

Phase 2 Underway Between Glenarm and Tremont Place

Phase 2 of construction between Glenarm and Tremont Place (Block 10) is currently underway and will continue through April. This phase includes installing the new granite pavers on the sidewalks and will require a change in the fencing layout. The image above is a general example of Phase 2 work and fencing. Phase 2 fences in this block are modified to help progress work.

Phase 3 Underway Between California and Welton Streets

During Phase 3, the project team completes any final, small-scale work while the Downtown Denver Business Improvement District (BID) begins installing the final furnishings, fixtures and equipment along 16th Street. The installation of the final touches including furniture, planters, trash cans and other special elements that will introduce the New Look on 16th Street may occur after Phase 3 of construction is complete, depending on the BID’s schedule, timelines of deliveries and weather.

DDP Appoints Branding Agency

In partnership with the City & County of Denver and the 16th Street Mall project team, the Downtown Denver Partnership has appointed DNCO, a renowned international place branding agency, to lead the repositioning of 16th Street Mall. The repositioning work – which is taking place in lockstep with the reconstruction of the mile-long pedestrian way – will introduce a new visual identity to usher the space into its next chapter. 

DNCO’s work to reposition 16th Street involves crafting an updated messaging and visual identity to further enhance 16th Street’s distinct sense of place. Drawing on their expertise connecting residents, visitors, and businesses, DNCO is poised to redefine the 16th Street Mall blending its heritage with a forward-looking perspective.
