Doctors and staff of Mt. San Rafael Hospital in Trinidad, CO, recently joined with employees of GH Phipps to celebrate the opening of the new $25.5 million, two-story, 31,098-square-foot addition to the hospital. The addition will provide the community with expanded services and capabilities.

The first floor provides an expanded emergency department and imaging services and the second floor is home to a new 14-bed Patient Care Unit, along with a new central plant. Overall, the new construction consisted of an Emergency Department, Imaging Department, Central Utility Plant and 14-bed Patient Care Unit. A basement renovation, including new elevators and stairs, as well as an IT room renovation and existing hospital corridor upgrades will be part of this badly needed upgrade to the existing hospital. The architect for the project was SLAM Collaborative.

“We take a great deal of pride in our ability to provide the healthcare industry with a highly knowledgeable and experienced team of professionals who understand the unique aspects associated with hospital construction,” said Mark Arnold, director of Healthcare, GH Phipps. “It was a pleasure and honor to work with the team from Mt. San Rafael and provide the people of Trinidad with a tremendous new addition to help meet their healthcare needs.”

Some of the unique challenges associated with the project included:

  • Ongoing hospital operations on a busy campus. Maintaining main entrance access and ED entrances on opposite sides of the new construction.
  • Tight site challenges with no room for construction vehicles and equipment onsite. The GH Phipps team constructed an offsite area for construction staging and equipment.
  • Major transformer, switchgear and emergency power system upgrades, along with other critical system tie-ins.
