Fort Collins-based design-build firm The Neenan Company has been recognized by the Association for Learning Environments’ Rocky Mountain Chapter for its work leading the design and construction of Mapleton Public Schools’ Broadway Campus in Thornton. Neenan earned the Peak Design Merit Award, which honors excellence in education-based architecture and design for projects that feature 80 percent or more of new construction.
The Mapleton Public Schools Broadway Campus project transformed a nearly 60-year-old former K-12 International Baccalaureate facility into a family of three IB schools spanning grades PK-3, 4-8 and 9-12. The project also provided the opportunity for the district to add The Mapleton Arts Center to its educational offerings, which serves as both the district-wide performing arts center and the Performing Arts School on Broadway for 7th – 12th grades. A4LE selected the project based on the design’s impact on the campus planning process as well as the resulting learning, physical and community environments.
“Schools play a vital role in our communities and knowing that we can be part of the solution that elevates the learning environment is what drives us, every day,” said David Kurtz, senior architect for The Neenan Company. “We’ve worked with Mapleton Public Schools on numerous projects since 2005, and we consider the Broadway Campus a legacy project between our teams. The project embodies the spirit of partnership we aim to bring to all our projects, and knowing this is recognized by the education design community is beyond rewarding.”
The Neenan Company strengthens and builds communities across the country with an integrated and entrepreneurial approach to design, construction and development projects. Founded in 1966, the Colorado-based firm is a pioneer of the design-build model and specializes in creating commercial, education, health care and community facilities that generate economic vitality and inspire people to be well, to learn and to lead.
