On Wednesday, April 12, the Downtown Denver Partnership joined with the City and County of Denver and a coalition of community partners to announce ¡Viva! Streets, Denver’s first-ever large-scale Ciclovía — the term given to the temporary closing of certain streets to motorized vehicles for cyclists and pedestrians.

Over four Sundays May through August beginning on Sunday, May 14, 3.5 miles of downtown streets spanning from Welton Street located in Five Points, all the way down to the intersection of South Broadway and Alameda will be closed to vehicles and open to people and families of all ages.

In conjunction with ¡Viva! Streets, the partnership’s fan-favorite summer tradition, Taste of Colorado, will expand from its usual Labor Day Weekend slot to take place during all four Sundays of ¡Viva! Streets from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Civic Center Park. Consistent with previous years, Taste of Colorado will feature live music, food trucks, vendors, a beer garden, kid-friendly activities, and sponsor activations. Rather than confining the festivities to Labor Day Weekend, eventgoers will have four opportunities throughout the summer to enjoy the delicious food and drinks Taste of Colorado has to offer.

“¡Viva! Streets is a true celebration of our city and its richly diverse neighborhoods and communities,” said Kourtny Garrett, president and CEO of the Downtown Denver Partnership. “Opening up our streets will allow people of all ages from across our region to experience Denver and connect with one another in a whole new way. We’re excited to be joining cities from across the globe in a movement to encourage healthier choices for our community and environment.”

Paying homage to Ciclovía’s Colombian roots, ¡Viva! Streets aims to promote a healthier Denver by encouraging people to walk, bike, roll, jog, scoot, or dance down the car-free streets and connect with others through exercise, entertainment, and food. ¡Viva! Streets will occur rain or shine on May 14, June 4, July 9, and August 6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Initially introduced in Bogota, Colombia in 1974, similar events became increasingly popular in major urban centers across South and Latin America and have spread across the globe. Today, more than 400 cities in nearly 30 countries put on similar events.

¡Viva! Streets partners also include AARP, CBS Colorado, Delta Dental, Gates Corporation, Gates Family Foundation, Lime, Lyft, PNC Bank, the Regional Air Quality Council (RAQC)
