Independent bookstore Little Blue Pigeon opens its doors in Denver’s historic Larimer Square on Wednesday, April 1. Located at 1413 Larimer St., Suite 100, Little Blue Pigeon is an independent, highly curated bookstore rooted in community, conversation and thoughtful discovery.
Created by Denverite Paige Dungan, who herself authored a children’s book while also working in book marketing for more than 20 years, Little Blue Pigeon is a manifestation of deep industry knowledge and a long-standing commitment to literary culture.
“I’ve built my career around launching, positioning and championing authors and literary voices,” said Dungan. “The Little Blue Pigeon is a natural extension of that work—a move from promoting books to creating a permanent physical platform for them – and I couldn’t be more excited to launch this store.”
The warm, design-forward space evokes the feeling of a lived-in library, with shelves enveloped by muraled walls showcasing beloved children’s book characters, hand-painted by Julie Barnett and Abby Anderson, of local women-owned business Lupine Designs. Featuring an expansive area for regular family story time, children’s programming and creative workshops, Little Blue Pigeon will also play host to year-round author conversations, artisan pop-ups, literary gatherings and ticketed community events. With an atmosphere that blends culture with hospitality, Little Blue Pigeon is designed as a “third place” — or neighborhood hub beyond home and work.
“We’re excited to offer both residents and visitors a calm, engaging environment where readers of all ages can explore books, attend small gatherings, and participate in community-centered initiatives,” said Dungan.
Unlike larger corporate bookstores which often purchase and stock based on algorithms or bulk buying trends, every book in the store is read and personally selected by Dungan. Shelves of approximately 4,000 titles focus on literary fiction, thoughtful nonfiction and beautifully produced cookbooks, and the space is intentionally designed to encourage lingering, dialogue and connection.
Each month, Little Blue Pigeon will partner with a Denver-based literacy organization serving children and adults for its Book Forward literacy advocacy program. As part of the program, for every five books sold, one book will be donated to that month’s partner. April’s partner is BookGive, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that donates new and gently used books from its service station to individuals, schools and nonprofits throughout the metro area.
“The beneficiary rotates monthly to support a broad spectrum of literacy initiatives across the city,” said Dungan. “The idea is that when our shelves thrive, we can also help the community thrive.”
To celebrate, on April 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests are invited to enjoy light bites and a variety of free activities, including caricature photos with their favorite books, a book personalization sticker bar in partnership with local artisan Unruly Wit, and a children’s scavenger hunt with prizes. Aura photography will also be available for a fee.
