Target has officially opened its newest and largest food distribution center in Thornton, marking a $367 million investment in Colorado’s industrial and logistics market while expanding the retailer’s grocery supply chain capabilities across the western United States.

The temperature-controlled facility, developed by Ryan Companies, spans approximately 529,000 square feet and will serve 129 Target stores across 11 states, helping replenish locations up to two days faster than previous supply chain operations. The center is expected to employ more than 380 workers and represents Target’s ninth food distribution center nationwide and its fourth food distribution facility opened within the last three years.

Located at 15450 Washington St. in Thornton, the facility is designed to support Target’s growing food and beverage business, which has become an increasingly important component of the retailer’s overall strategy.

“This facility represents so much more than just a new building,” Amy Probst, senior vice president of Food and Beverage Supply Chain, Trade and Transportation at Target, said in a statement. “We’re advancing and expanding our fresh supply chain capabilities so that guests can rely on us for all their high-quality meals, snacks and seasonal treats.”

The Thornton facility is Target’s first food distribution center equipped with consolidation capabilities, allowing the retailer to combine shipments from multiple vendors and distribution centers into fully loaded truckloads destined for stores and other facilities. The strategy is expected to reduce transportation costs, improve efficiency throughout Target’s logistics network and streamline delivery operations.

According to Target, the facility includes specialized infrastructure for handling fresh and frozen products, pantry staples and produce, including 12 banana-ripening rooms. Company officials say the center will help reduce supply chain lead times by one to two days from farm to store shelf, improving freshness and product availability.

The opening further strengthens Colorado’s position as a regional logistics hub, benefiting from access to Interstate 25, Interstate 70 and major western transportation corridors. The project adds to a growing concentration of large-scale industrial and distribution facilities in the north metro Denver market, where retailers, e-commerce operators and logistics providers continue to expand operations to serve the Mountain West region.

Target currently operates 48 stores and multiple supply chain facilities throughout Colorado and has announced plans for additional store growth and renovations across the state.

The Thornton distribution center represents one of the largest recent industrial investments in the Denver metropolitan area and underscores continued demand for modern cold-storage and food distribution facilities despite broader shifts in the industrial real estate market.
