AGC Student Chapter at Colorado State University Wins National Community Service Award

(From L to R) Nick Anderson, Steven Leighton, Andrew Crane, Vanna Hosanny and Brian Kingsford from the AGC Student Chapter at Colorado State University accepted the National Community Service Award in Las Vegas.

The Associated General Contractors of Colorado (AGC of Colorado) Student Chapter at Colorado State University (CSU) was honored with the AGC of America National Student Chapter Community Service Award at the AGC of America National Convention in Las Vegas, on March 12.

The AGC Student Chapter at CSU won $2,000 for its construction remodel project that benefitted the Panella family – a single father with two children, who needed an addition on to their home to make it more accessible for his son who had Cerebral Palsy. The construction project included the addition of a ramp, covered deck and carport that allowed the 13-year old greater access to his home and to the outdoors without having to be carried up the steps. AGC of Colorado members worked hand-in-hand with the AGC Student Chapter at CSU to supplement the construction materials and volunteer labor-hours needed to complete the remodel project.

This Community Service Award was one of three Outstanding Student Chapter Awards distributed at the National Convention. Per AGC of America, “The AGC Student Chapter Community Service Award is given to those Student Chapters that epitomize supporting, engaging, and benefiting the community through service.”

“We are honored that our local AGC Student Chapter was recognized for their volunteer efforts on a national level,” commented Bryan Cook, executive director of the Construction Education Foundation of Colorado and Chapter Operations Director for AGC of Colorado. “Construction has a way of bringing people together from all walks of life to help make a lasting impact in our local communities.”

The AGC Student Chapter at CSU was established to “enhance the knowledge of students who wish to pursue a career in the commercial construction industry.” The goals of the organization include the following:

  • Introduce students to the commercial construction industry
  • Provide opportunities for students to meet commercial general contractors
  • Allow club members opportunities for student scholarships

The AGC Student Chapter at CSU meets monthly, hosts networking events, and organizes construction job-site visits. AGC of Colorado works closely with these student chapter members, offering internships and supporting volunteer opportunities like this one to benefit their community.
