Judges for the 2019 Gold Nugget Awards named Stantec a Grand Award winner in its annual competition, which honors architectural design and planning excellence and draws entries from throughout the United States and internationally. Stantec, contractor Hensel Phelps Construction, and the Colorado Rockies earned its Grand Award for McGregor Square, which was honored as the Best On-the-Boards Mixed-Use Project. Stantec is providing architecture, interior design, lighting design, land planning, landscape architecture, and visioning for the project.

Slated to open Jan. 1, 2021, McGregor Square is a mixed-use experiential hub adjacent to Coors Field, where Colorado residents and Rockies fans will be able to gather for pre- and post-game festivities, plus year-round events such as concerts, festivals, and other public activities. With direct access to Union Station and the RiNo district, this critical urban connection point will feature a public plaza, 225,531 square feet of office space, the new Rockies Hall of Fame, restaurants, 174 hotel rooms, 75,471 square feet of retail space, and 107 multifamily residential units.

“Our goal from the beginning has been to give Denver a year-round venue to celebrate this area of LoDo, while enhancing the gameday experience for locals and visitors,” said John Yonushewski, senior principal at Stantec. “We’re honored to have been recognized by the Gold Nugget Awards for our vision on this transformational project.”

The judging panel stated: “[We are] particularly impressed with how this concept activates at the street level—visually pulling the public into a vibrant, central promenade that extends through the site. This concept also ideally integrates open spaces with retail, restaurants, multifamily residential, hotel, and office space—and the new Rockies Hall of Fame. It’ll be a world-class extension of Coors Field’s success, and it’s sure to become one of Denver’s iconic destinations.”

The award was announced May 31 as a feature highlight of PCBC, the nation’s largest regional conference and trade show for the real estate development field. Known as the “Academy Awards” of the building industry, PCBC’s Gold Nugget Awards judges reviewed 600+ entries to select winners showcasing the most exciting trends in design, planning, and building.
