The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) green roof serves as a a hallmark of environmental sustainability in downtown Denver.

As the world grapples with the challenges of rapid urbanization and climate change, the push to become greener has increased for cities everywhere. In fact, 52% of Americans now value environmental protection over economic growth.

To pinpoint the U.S. cities that took the most steps toward greener, cleaner living, CoworkingCafe, part of the Yardi network, looked at 12 key sustainability metrics, including air quality, green energy and buildings.

Denver ranks 15th among the most sustainable cities in the U.S., hosting some of the highest numbers of green buildings and eco-friendly coworking spaces. On top, Colorado has one of the highest levels of involvement in recycling.

Here are the main reasons why Denver ranks so high among America’s top sustainable cities:

  • Denver secured 15th place among the best U.S. green cities;
  • Denver hosts the 9th largest share of workers who commute by bike (1.9%) and the 13th highest number of charging stations (353), along with a bike and scooter share system;
  • Additionally, Denver harbors the 4th largest number of all-green buildings (992), which in turn host 23 eco-friendly coworking spaces, ranking 7th nationally;
  • On a state level, Colorado, not only boasts 13th highest share of green energy (37%), but also records the 3rd highest share of participants in the recycling program, with a 68% participation rate.

Nationally, San Francisco, CA, was this year’s eco all-star due to its many environmentally friendly buildings and widespread adoption of green commuting alternatives, like biking and public transportation. Washington, D.C. secured the second spot with its leading number of green buildings, while Portland, OR, rounded out the top three with one of the greenest transportation networks in the nation.
